A new government survey asked 2,000 members of the public how many gay people they knew.
The YouGov survey revealed that the average British person knows 5.5 gay men and 3.1 gay women.
Women are more likely to know more lesbians than the men who answered the survey, but they also know more gay men.
Unsurprisingly, people who identified as gay, lesbian or bisexual know more gay people, with the average British gay person knowing 21.6 gay man and 10.3 gay women.
People living in London knew more gay men (8.5 compared to between 4.8 – 5.5 in the rest of the country), although the number of lesbians the respondents claimed to know was about the same throughout the country (approximately 3).
It is estimated that there are about 3.6 million people living in the UK who publicly identify themselves as gay or lesbian.
