In what is probably one of the least surprising showbiz announcements, singer Barry Manilow has announced that he is gay.
The 73-year-old singer told People magazine that he has been in a relationship with his manager Garry Kief since 1978.
He has never publically revealed his sexuality before for fear that he would “disappoint” his fans if they knew that he was gay.
He married Kief in 2014, and says that the reaction from his fans who knew was “beautiful – strangers commenting, ‘Great for you!’ I’m just so grateful for it.”
The singer began his career accompanying gay icon Bette Midler at the infamous Continental Baths in New York in the 1970s, before reaching solo success with songs like Mandy and Copacabana.
His latest album, This is my Town, will be released later this month.
