When accepting Glamour Magazine’s Man of the Year award, Bono took the opportunity to urge President-elect Trump to prioritise gender equality.
Given that one of the more damning criticisms of Trump is his sexism and the accussations of sexual harassment, this definitely a concern for many. Also, as you may know, there has been a lot of criticism over the fact that Bono is the very first man to be honoured at the Glamour Women of the Year awards, which Bono himself addressed during his speech.
Bono said: “I say to the president-elect: look across to women, make equality a priority, it is the only way forward.”
This is definitely going to be a critical issue for the upcoming President, as there are already mass protests organised by women’s groups and feminists for the day after he takes office. If Trump can put this issue to rest, it will be one less issue to divide an already divided nation.
Bono continued: “I know how ridiculous it is for me to be on this stage accepting this award. But if I didn’t know how ridiculous it was, I did have the blessed internet to remind me. As my daughter Jordan says, there is nowhere on earth where women have the same opportunities as men.”
“I’ll tell you the real reason that I’m here. It’s one of the tiny, few awards that caused excitement in our house and stopped the usual dinner conversation and started… a conversation that unless we address this problem, both women and men together, our world will continue down this misogynistic, violent and impoverished path.”
“2016 might be the year I stop believing north stars are always visible, even through a layer of fog. This year, the north star looked like a neon sign, fizzing and crackling, ‘hate for hire,’ ‘girls for rent,’ ‘women need not apply,’. I say to the president-elect, look across to women. Make equality a priority. It is the only way forward. The train is leaving the station, be on it or be under it.”
