Alabama Governor Robert Bentley has resigned his post as top executive of the state, this just as the state legislature began impeachment hearings against him for abusing his position in an attempt to cover up an extramarital affair.
An affair you ask? Yes, this is the same governor who has spoken of the importance of traditional marriage. Of course, Governor Bentley also claimed that allowing gay people to marry would undermine our society. What a hypocrite…
Just a few years ago, the governor’s legal team filed a brief in an attempt to deny gay marriage. The brief stated: “To change Alabama’s definition of marriage by judicial fiat would undermine the integrity of the courts and would alter society’s understanding of marital norms and responsibilities, to the detriment of children and civil society…. Alabama has chosen a traditional, conjugal, opposite-sex definition of marriage, as opposed to a revisionist definition that includes all consent-based emotional relationships.”
The governor (now former governor!) has been married to his wife for 50 years and denied having an affair; however, recordings were made public of telephone conversations that made it clear he was not the gentleman he so claims to be. Perhaps Governor Bentley is trying to unilaterally “alter society’s understanding of marital norms” by his example!?
The governor saw the writing on the wall and he announced “I have decided it is time for me to step down as Alabama’s governor.” Good riddance.
