At the Grammy’s, Laverne Cox sent Google into overdrive when she asked the viewers to “please Google ‘Gavin Grimm.” The trans actress went on stage to introduce Metallica and Lady Gaga, but she had a message for everyone watching regarding Gavin: “He’s going to the Supreme Court in March. #StandWithGavin.”
Grimm is a 17-year-old high school teen from Gloucester, Virginia, who was born a girl but who completely identifies as a boy. “I was dressing 100 percent male, barring when I was forced to do otherwise, since I was 11 or 12,” he says. Now he is locked in a fight with the school board regarding his use of the school’s bathrooms.
He came out as transgender to his teachers and classmates during his sophomore year and since then has been using the boys’ bathroom. However, recently the local school board banned him from doing so and said that he has to use the restroom that corresponds to his “biological gender.”
Grimm’s family sued the school board, stating that Title IX of the United States Education Amendments of 1972 prohibits discrimination on the basis of sex. Grimm was represented by the ACLU. While Grimm lost that case, he did win on appeal, and now the case is escalating to the Supreme Court.
The Trump Administration has already dropped hints that it does not support the Obama Administration’s interpretation of Title IX, so we will keep our eyes and ears open to what the Supreme Court decides.
