Two former nuns got married this week in one of the first same sex unions celebrated in Italy.
Both 44-year-old women, Federica and Isabel, were nuns of Franciscan order and met during a pilgrimage. Isabel is from South America, while Federica is from southern Italy. The nuns spent time doing charitable work at a rehabilitation center in Africa, when they found themselves falling in love.
In order to pursue their relationship, they were defrocked and forced to leave their order, but they did not leave God or the church behind.
“God wants people to be happy, wants them to live their love out in broad daylight,” Isabel said.
Federica added “we’re asking our church to welcome all people who love each other”.
The newlyweds said that “even if we have left the convent, we haven’t left the church and we haven’t forgotten our faith”.
The couple says they will also be having a religious wedding ceremony. An excommunicated priest, Don Franco Barbero, who has married 19 gay couples just this year, plans to officiate.
Don Barbero said: “I must add, for the record, that it is not the first time that I happen to marry two sisters.”
Love is love. And love wins. Congrats to the happy couple!
