Earlier today on the Ellen DeGeneres show, former NBA star Magic Johnson discussed being a parent of a gay child.
Magic’s son EJ, who is in his mid-20s, has been on a few reality shows including Rich Kids of Beverly Hills, and came out as gay in 2013. On today’s show, Magic highlighted the importance of parents to support their children regardless of their lifestyles.
“It’s all about you not trying to decide what your daughter or son should be or what you want them to become… It’s all about loving them ― no matter who they are, what they decide to do. When my son came out I was so happy for him and happy for us as parents. And we love him ― EJ is amazing.”
And Magic continued his positive message:
“You’ve got to support your child because there’s so many people who try to discriminate against them so they need you to support them because if you don’t support them, who is going to support them? And love them.”
Magic has advocated for HIV/AIDS prevention since retiring from professional basketball. He is now a partial owner of several professional sports teams in Los Angeles.
