Modern Family has been running for eight seasons, but apparently that doesn’t mean it can’t still break new ground. It has been revealed that an upcoming episode of the show will feature a transgender child actor.
This episode, entitled A Stereotypical Day, will feature the talents of the 8 year old trans actor Jackson Millarker. The plot of the episode focuses on Cameron “Cam” (Eric Stonestreet) and Mitchell (Jesse Tyler Ferguson), who arrange a play date for their daughter Lily (Aubrey Anderson-Emmons) with her transgender friend Tom, (Jackson).
As fans of the show will know, the parents pride themselves on being open, nonjudgmental and supportive parents but must rethink their pride in having raised their daughter well, when they overhear Lily insulting Tom. Thus, we get the ever familiar teachable moment.
Ryan Case, who directed this particular episode, announced Jackson’s appearance by posting a picture of him on set: “This is Jackson Millarker. He’s 8 years old, from Atlanta, and just happens to be transgender. He plays Lily’s friend Tom in this week’s Modern Family and he’s wonderful. One of the many reasons I love being a part of this show.”
The inclusion of Jackson the 22-time Emmy award winning show is another step forward for transgender actors. We have seen the profiles of transgender actors rise over the last few years, particularly on TV.
This news follows pretty closely on the heels of the fact that Laverne Cox, best known as Sophia in Orange is the New Black, will be making history later this year by playing the first full-time transgender character on broadcast TV in the CBS show Doubt.
Let’s hope this rise of trans talent only continues.
