Rami Malek has landed the role of Freddie Mercury in the upcoming film, Bohemian Rhapsody. Malek is best known for his starring role in the new television hit, Mr. Robot. The director, Bryan Singer, announced the new Freddie on Instagram.
Malek is replacing Sacha Baron Cohen, who was previously tied to the project, after there were a number of creative differences. Cohen wanted the movie to focus solely on Mercury’s story, while the band members had a different vision. The Queen members then retaliated by saying that the Borat star wasn’t enough of an “actor” to take on the powerful role.
We don’t yet know when the movie will be released but are thrilled that the project is back on track. Malek has already won an Emmy and a Critic’s Choice Award for his tv role as hacker Elliot Alderson, so we are excited to see what he brings to the role of Mercury as he transitions to the big screen. And Malek’s resemblance to the iconic Queen’s singer is quite uncanny, so let’s hope for a believable outcome.
