James Franco knows how to play a gay man. He’s done it in Milk, Howl, The Broker Tower, and most recently, King Cobra.
He’s now playing a gay man again, but this time, it is one who believes he has “successfully converted” to heterosexuality.
In the powerful new drama, I Am Michael, Franco plays Michael Glatze, a gay rights activist and documentarian who later became a born again to believes he effectively prayed the gay away. He went on to become the poster child for the ex-gay movement and married a woman in 2013. Obviously, he received an uproar of criticism for his ex-gay speech and his hurtful and hateful comments against the LGBT community.
This film attempt to tell the story of both Michael’s—the gay man and the born-again Christian figure. Franco says:
“we were going to have a very even-handed, non-judgmental approach, but we also had to say to ourselves, ‘We’re not telling this story just to make Michael happy, we’re telling the story to get both sides….We have good intentions. We’re not going to crucify or judge [him] but we also need to tell the story from the other side as well.”
The movie co-stars co-stars Zachary Quinto and Emma Roberts. You can watch the full trailer for the film below:
