Doctor Who is far from virginal when it comes to spin offs, as it’s already had Torchwood and The Sarah Jane Adventures spawn from it.
But, we have a new spin-off on the horizon by the name of Class, created by Patrick Ness.
The first thing that Patrick touched on in a recent interview with Empire, is the location of Coal Hill, a key location for the Doctor Who universe ever since the classic series.
He said: “Coal Hill has existed in Doctor Who since literally episode one. The Doctor’s granddaughter went there. So we thought, ‘All that time activity at the school, has that caused any problems?’ Well, what do you know, it has!”
The new spin-off will have a cast of teenagers running into otherworldly creatures, in a similar vein to the classic 90’s show Buffy, which apparently was a touch point for Patrick and the other creators.
““Adults watch that, because it’s a great show, but the POV and the agency are all teenage, and that’s what we want to do with Class. It needs to be from the point of view of the sixth-formers – but that doesn’t mean that it’s necessarily a ‘young show’.”
But, we won’t be having any superhero shenanigans here, Class’ cast will be a set of ordinary teenagers faced with the extraordinary.
“We’re not telling stories of the ‘chosen ones’. It’s happenstance that puts these people [at the centre of things]. What if your timing is just weird and things happen to you? How do you deal with it? I’m interested in real consequences. The Doctor is always exciting, but he never faints. He goes off on the next adventure. What happens to real people?”
For those interested, Class with premiere in October.
I am a little concerned about teenagers being the stars, but as long as they have chosen the right actors, it could be a great story of ordinary people facing off against otherworldly beings that far outmatch them. And who knows, we could even have the occasional appearance from the Doctor himself…
