Rainbow Laces Sparks Awful Responses – Lays bare homophobia in sport

As we discussed, the Premier League supported the Stonewall Rainbow Laces campaign and while it did get a showing of support, it also sparked some also responses and laid bare the issues of homophobia in sport.

Numerous clubs supported Rainbow Laces over the last week, including big name clubs Manchester United, Arsenal, Liverpool, West Ham, AFC Bournemouth and Hull City. The Rainbow Laces  from Stonewall shows support for LGBT fans and those players who have yet to come out. As you probably know, there are no current high tier players who have come out. The last one was Justin Fashanu, who died back in 1990.

The reaction from fans was, shall we say, a bit mixed. While there were many messages of support from fans and people from outside of the football space, there was also a shocking amount of homophobia on display.
