Actor Russell Tovey has said that he is very happy that the new Doctor companion Bill Potts, played by Pearl Mackie, is to be gay,

Tovey, who is gay himself, and played the character of Midshipman Frame in the long-running TV series, told the Radio Times that the issue should be talked about and highlighted in the show.

“We’ve had gay characters, we’ve had John Barrowman as Captain Jack, and then my Midshipman Frame is hinted as being gay.

“That makes me happy – it makes me very happy. I think it should definitely be something that is talked about and highlighted and celebrated, and everyone should know about it.”

He also said that he thought it was time that the Doctor should be a woman.

He also spoke to the magazine about his highly acclaimed role in The Pass, a film about a closeted Premier League player.

“There’s not a premiership footballer who’s come out while they’re playing,” he told the Radio Times. “So that taboo is definitely still there, there’s definitely fear of doing it.

The Pass is out on DVD on 10 April
