Same Sex Married Olympians Win Record Setting Gold

We already told you about field hockey players Kate Richardson-Walsh and Helen Richardson-Walsh who made history at Rio competing as the first married same sex Olympians playing together at the games. However, they have now taken it a step further by winning gold in a match over Australia 2-1.

They won their games in a shootout, and are now the first gay married couple to win gold medals together.

About her marriage, Kate has said: “We just want to show that it’s a normal thing. We’re not out there shouting it, it’s just part and parcel of who we are.”

She added: “We’re a couple, we love each other, and we happen to be playing in the same team. I think because our teammates and our friends and family have all been so supportive and understanding of that we also don’t see anything strange or different.”

Kate and Helen have been married since 2013 and their teammates have been fully supportive.
