The Grammy Awards will be aired tomorrow– Sunday, February 12th, and one of the biggest surprises of the night has already been revealed. Martina Robledo, a transgender model, will be one of the “trophy girls” at the event.
This year, the Grammy Awards is making a concerted effort this year to be more broad and open-minded, believing that “music’s universal power lies in its spirit of inclusion”. Their “trophy girl” team will also include a man for the first time.
Neil Portnow, president of the Recording Academy, said: “To be honest, the idea of a ‘trophy girl’ has felt antiquated for some time now. Who wrote that rule anyway? The ability to present a trophy has nothing to do with one’s gender.”
Martina Robeledo is very excited about her own participation in the event, despite the mixed reception she expects. “I know it’s going to make some people uncomfortable and make others weep for joy. I’m just going to step out there and strut and make sure I deliver my best, because there’s people out there looking up to me.”
