A new album featuring LGBT musicians will be released soon, and it will feature artists from some of the most anti-LGBT countries in world. The album, Rainbow Riots, has artists from Jamaica, Malawi, and Uganda and will include a myriad of musical genres.
The concept is being spearheaded by Peter Wallenberg, a Swedish artist and activist. Wallenberg is producing the album, and all proceeds will support his charity to support LGBT rights and end discrimination.
Wallenberg explained: “Imagine that your very existence is a crime and that the police, authorities, and lynch mobs chase you simply because you are who you are…. I created Rainbow Riots as a movement to fight for the freedom against tyranny.”
Some of the artists come from countries were being gay is actually illegal, so they have decided to remain anonymous on the album, but understood how important their contributions would still be. One musician from Uganda explained: “Our lives are already in danger – it doesn’t help if we keep quiet.”
The album is scheduled for release on June 16th.
