Nebraska, a state that still does not provide job discriminstion protections based on sexual orientation and gender identity is trying to do something about it. Debate has started on Legislative Bill 627, sponsored by State Senator Patty Pansing Brooks, who herself had a gay son.
The proposed bill will give LGBT workers protection on equal footing with the laws protecting against job discrimination based on race, sex, religion, color, national origins, marital status, or disabilities. There are the usual arguments from those against this kind of bill; that it would leave employers open to lawsuits and would impede on the rights of business owners. Meanwhile the ability for these businesses to treat the LGBT community unfairly is keeping professionals from going to Nebraska and forcing others to leave.
