On 24 June 2015, we had a conversation with Babette Wasserman, owner of Babette Wasserman Jewellery. You can check it out below.
Q: Who is Babette Wasserman ?
I created my company Babette Wasserman Jewellery in 1997, after spotting a gap in the market in men’s jewellery and cufflinks in particular. At the time every cufflink on the market had a very traditional torpedo back and having recently graduated from Central St Martin’s college of Art, (2 years prior) I could not understand why cufflinks did not have a gorgeous back as well as the front! So after a couple of years working for a jewellery brand and for a PR company, I set out to create my own brand. My very first cufflinks collection was inspired by the iconic TV show Shooting Stars and everything that I saw in the world! It consisted of a Dove from Above cufflink with a little yellow duck and an egg at the back, a very British Target Board cufflink with an enamelled back and one of my most iconic designs which I still make, the Saucer Reversible cufflink which has two faces and can be worn on either side making two completely different looking cufflinks in one.
Today, we are represented in over 200 independents and department stores around the globe, including Le Bon Marche Paris, Lane Crawford Hong Kong/China, Bloomingdales USA and Beymen Turkey to name but a few. Our initial philosophy still holds true, we create stylish men’s accessories with a twist of originality and splash of humour.
Q: Although you design jewellery for both men and women, you are particularly recognised for your mens collection of cufflinks and bracelets. How should men accessorise these days?
I have seen many trends come and go but the fundamentals always remain the same: smart will always be smart!
This is especially true of cufflinks. Although in the last few years people have started to dress down more easily for work, it is still the best dressed men who wear a tailored two piece suit with a slim-fitted white shirt and cufflinks that really catch people’s attention.
I have just flown back from Pitti Uomo, Europe’s most important menswear and accessories trade show based in Florence and the word on the street is that lapel pins are back! Buyers and bloggers alike had them on their ’Trends Watch List’ and if you are partial to the pocket square or pochette as we like to call them, we have a large range of lapel pins that you can match to your pochette or even to your mood!
And don’t forget your bracelets, we love the layered look, setting off one of our stylish Demon Single Weave leather bracelets with multiple Stone Monkey beaded bracelet is a great look for both daywear or evening. Even our young Royals are wearing them!
