Some rather disheartening and saddening news was revealed recently, that a transgender woman sent to a male prison was found dead.
Joanne Latham was at Woodhill prison in Milton Kenyes was serving a life sentence. She was found hanging by a prison officer at HMP Woodhill on November 27, and was pronounced dead two hours later.
A spokesperson for the Prison Service had this to say: “HMP Woodhill prisoner Joanne Latham, was found unresponsive on the morning of Friday 27 November. Staff and paramedics attempted resuscitation but she was pronounced dead at 6.20am. As with all deaths in custody there will be an investigation by the independent Prisons and Probation Ombudsman.”
This follows the death of transgender woman Vicky Thompson, who was being held at a male prison in Leeds.
