An anti-transgender bus has started its tour along the United States’ East Coast. The bus is calling itself the “Free Speech Bus” and claims to explain “the truth of gender” to people. The organizers of the bus are the National Organization of Marriage, the International Organization for the Family (IOF) and CitizenGO who teamed up to make this terrible idea a reality.
The bright orange bus, which began its journey in New York City, has a strong message for the LGBT community. It says:
“It’s biology: Boys are boys…and always will be. Girls are girls…and always will be. You can’t change sex. Respect all.”
Brian S. Brown, president of NOM and IOF, said that gender is “fixed, immutable and complementary. Rather than perpetuate a lie that gender can be changed based on emotions and feelings, we should encourage people to embrace and love who they were made to be.” Brown also is one of the boycotters of Starbucks for the support the company has shown towards gay marriage.
Jessica Stern of Outright Action International responded to Brown’s comments by saying that the bus is harmful to the LGBT community. “Broadcasting a message that erases and denies the reality that transgender and intersex children and youth exist is irresponsible, factually misleading, disrespectful, and dangerous. This vehicle is part of the reason trans youth are driven to suicide.”
After two days of being on the road, the bus was reportedly vandalized and spray painted with the words “Trans Liberation.” At the time, the bus was parked near the United Nations headquarters. It plans to continue its tour, though, by stopping in Boston and then Philadelphia.
