The popular comic book character Archie Andrews will die saving the life of Kevin Keller, his gay best friend.
This Wednesday's issue of Life with Archie will see Archie take a bullet meant for Kevin.
The openly gay Kevin was introduced to the American comic book series four years ago and has proved enormously popular with the character quickly been given his own title.
He also featured in a same-sex marriage storyline which caused anti-gay group One Million Moms to boycott the issue in which Kevin got married to his boyfriend.
The new issue, which takes a look at the life of the Archie characters after high school, sees Kevin as a newly-elected senator fighting for tighter gun control.
Archie saves Kevin's when an assassin tries to kill him.
"Archie is not a superhero like all the rest of the comic book characters," Archie Comics CEO Jan Goldwater told the Associated Press. "If anything, I think his death is more impactful because of that. We hope by showing how something so violent can happen to Archie, that we can, in some way, learn from him."
Archie's death signals the end of the Life with Archie series, but the other Archie Comics, will continue.
