Barry Manilow is now speaking out about his coming out as a gay man last month.
In a recent interview with Reuter’s, Manilow explained that he had previously been apprehensive about fan’s reactions if he came out publicly, but when he finally did he soon realized that such fears were unfounded. Manilow explained: “I didn’t know what was going to happen … but I should have known better because my fans, and frankly the public, they care about my happiness and I have always known that.”
The singer, who is now 73 years old, has had a myriad of hit songs spanning several decades, as well as loyal fans including a strong female fan base (some of whom had crushes on Manilow). He actually said this was a factor in his fear of coming out – he did not want to disappoint the female fans!
Manilow recently released a new album, This is My Town: Songs of New York, and is performing live to support the album. However, this weekend Manilow said that due to his doctor’s orders he will have to rest his vocal chords and he will need to postpone some of his shows until later in the summer.
