A man, identified as Sebastian, simply cannot accept his sexuality and is, therefore, requesting death to end his pain and suffering. The man feels that his gay feelings have caused him to be “a prisoner in my own body.” The 39-year-old hopes that Belgium’s liberal euthanasia laws will soon be extended to him.
Sebastian said that his homosexuality has brought him to feel “a constant state of shame,” and he feels that assisted suicide is his only way out. He is attracted to younger men, many of whom are adolescents. Even though he has never acted on it, he has told doctors he believes he is a pedophile. “They told me: ‘you’re making things up. Move on with your life.’ They told me that I was not a danger to children,” he said. “I spent four years in a psychiatric hospital. I saw eight psychologists, four psychiatrists, and a sexologist. I even handed myself into the police in 2014 […] they referred me to another psychologist”
He continues: “society is against these kinds of relationships, which is right. So, I don’t want anything anymore. Only hell awaits me.” In order for him to attain approval of his request, three doctors must agree that the individual is in a “constant and unbearable physical or mental suffering”.
He believes his “whole life has led me to this, really. My mother had dementia so I wasn’t right, mentally. All that was instilled in me, so I was extremely lonely, very inhibited physically – scared to go out, hugely shy. I didn’t want to be gay.”
Sebastian simply feels like he cannot possibly come to terms with his sexuality, even after 17 years of intense therapy. “I have always thought about death. It is a permanent suffering.”
Assisted suicide is being used more frequently in Belgium, where the country’s medical professionals stand behind the belief that it can relieve psychological or physical suffering.
