Biden and Hathaway at Human Rights Campaign Dinner

At the Human Rights Campaign’s National Dinner on Saturday night, Former Vice President Joe Biden apologized for not speaking out sooner against Trump regarding marriage equality. Biden did not speak out to affirm his stance on marriage equality until 2012, when he and Barack Obama were beginning their second term. After that, Biden explained why he waited to speak out against Trump, saying “Barack and I agreed we would be quiet for the first year to let the new administration get up and running…God forgive me.”

Also in attendance, and recipient of the HRC’s Equality Award, Actress Anne Hathaway denounced white, straight, and cisgender privilege. Hathaway said in her acceptance speech, “It is important to acknowledge with the exception of being a cisgender male, everything about how I was born has put me at the current center of a damaging and widely accepted myth. That myth is that gayness orbits around straightness, transgender orbits around cisgender, and that all races orbit around whiteness.”
