In a rather long awaited move, the Boy Scouts of America Executive Committee has unanimously approved allow gay adults to serve as Scout leaders.
This is going to be a huge step for the organisation, and will make a huge move towards mending a rather large rift in the organisation that has been present for a very long time.
The Boy Scouts issued an official statement, saying: “This resolution will allow chartered organizations to select adult leaders without regard to sexual orientation, continuing Scouting’s longstanding policy of chartered organizations selecting their leaders.”
They then went on to say that the National Executive Board will meet to clarify the resolution on July 27.
Naturally, the announcement has been met with support from activists campaigning for the change, including executive director of Scouts for Equality Zach Wahls: “The Boy Scouts of America’s ban on gay adults has stood as a towering example of explicit, institutional homophobia in one of America’s most important and recognizable civic organizations.”
