Democratic Mayor Pete Buttigieg of South Bend, Indiana, officially announced his bid for the presidency yesterday. He made his announcement in the former Studebaker factory, that is now home to a tech hub, to a capacity crowd.
What makes this a huge deal for the LGBT community is that, if you didn’t know by now, Mayor Pete is openly gay. He’s also just 37 years old, was elected mayor of South bend at just 29, has modernized and revitalized the city, and served in Afghanistan during his first term as a reservist naval intelligence officer.
His decision to run comes after creating an exploratory committee in January, and in two recent Iowa polls he was third behind Bernie Sanders and Vice President Joe Biden.
