Lesbian drama Carol starring Cate Blanchett, is leading the way at the Spirit Awards with six nominations.
Cate Blanchett, who stars in the leading role as Carol Aird, is up for the best actress award alongside her co-star Rooney Mara.
The film is also nominated for best feature, screenplay and. cinematography. The director Todd Haynes is up for best director.
Cate recently discussed the film, saying: “It’s about two people falling in love, in the way that Romeo And Juliet is. The film has a universal quality to it where the women’s gender is absolutely vital, [an] impediment to them consummating their love, but it’s not the point of the film.”
Naturally, given that Cate is an Oscar winning actress, she isn’t hurting for offers. Yet, she will only commit to a film if she “engages with the film.”
“I just think, ‘Is this a good story? Am I interested in it?’ If you’re not connected, then there’s a snowflake’s chance in hell that the audience is going to be.”
Among the nominees we also have Beasts of No Nation, which is up for best feature, alongside Spotlight and Tangerine.
Idris Elba has also been nominated for best supporting actor for his role in Beasts of No Nation.
