After more than 30 years of being off our screens, classic comedy Are You Being Served? is set to return for at least a single episode.
While this is definitely being touted as a one-off special, if it’s successful it may be commissioned for a whole season.
What we have for you today is an announcement of the cast, which could very much make or break the return of this British classic.
Jason Watkins (The Lost Honour of Christopher Jefferies) as Mr Humphries
Sherrie Hewson (Benidorm, Coronation Street) as Mrs Slocombe
John Challis (Only Fools and Horses) as Captain Peacock
Roy Barraclough (Coronation Street) as Mr Grainger
Arthur Smith (Comedian and writer) as Mr Harmon
Niky Wardley (The Catherine Tate Show) as Miss Brahms
As you probably know, the original show had a pretty long run from 1975-1985. Producers of the upcoming episode have said that the new episode will pick up where the old series left off, and will be set in 1988.
For those of you wondering who will be handling the script, writing duties have been given to screenwriter Derren Litten, best known for Benidorm and The Catherine Tate Show.
Litten said of the new episode: “Writing a new episode of Are You Being Served? has been the most fun I have ever had as a professional writer. We have an amazing cast, a brilliant producer and a great director, it was just too exciting an opportunity to pass up and I am unanimous in that.”
The new episode will be filmed in front of a live studio audience next month, and will be screened later this year as part of a BBC comedy season celebrating the 60th anniversary of the sitcom format.
Other classic sitcoms might be rebooted as well, including Porridge and The Good Life. Would it be too much to ask for The Young Ones?
