ABC has announced that their upcoming mini-series entitled, When We Rise, will have some serious star power. Rachel Griffiths, Mary Louise Parker, and Guy Pearce are all confirmed for the lead roles.
When We Rise is an ABC 7-episode event that will tell the story of the key people involved in the evolution of the US civil rights movement from the 20th century up through today.
Pearce, best known for his roles in Momento and L.A. Confidential, plays LGBT activist Cleve Jones. Parker, the star of Weeds, will play Roma Guy, a woman’s rights advocate who is married to Rachel Griffiths’ character, Diane.
Cleve Jones was pivotal in the gay rights movement beginning as early as 1972. He founded the Names Project AIDS Memorial Quilt and then led the National March for Equality in 2009. Roma Guy and Diane co-founded the San Francisco Women’s Building and continued their work as social activists for several decades.
Academy Award winner, Dustin Lance Black, wrote the script and is producing the series. “It’s been the honor of my life to research and craft these stories of family, diversity and equality over the past three years,” Dustin Lance Black said in a statement. “To have collaborators of this caliber sign on to help bring these stories to life is a tremendous vote of confidence, and I hope a testament to the relevancy and necessity of our continued march toward justice for all.”
