It’s fairly well known that bisexual people often find themselves on the receiving end of biphobia, and unfortunately it can come from within the LBGT community as well as outside of it.
That’s why Bi Visibility Day is very important, as not only does it show support for bisexual people, it also raises awareness in numerous ways and there are also various events for people to attend.
In a press release, Stonewall chief executive Ruth Hunt had this to say: “We know that bi people suffer from dual prejudice – both from within the LGBT community and outside of it. Bi Visibility Day should not be used as one day to address a call to action. It should serve as a reminder that we must all tackle bi erasure, bi invisibility and biphobia whenever we witness it.”
Biphobia is also, unfortunately, prevalent in the workplace and as Ruth points out in her press release “in the workplace alone, we know that bi people are significantly less likely to feel comfortable being out to their colleagues when compared to lesbian and gay employees.”.
The aim of Bi Visibility Day isn’t just to have a single one off day, but to take steps to educate and raise awareness about the issues bisexual people face. Stonewall themselves are going to be continuing to “platform bi role models”, and are even looking for people to share their stories.
