Colin Farrell will be the best man at his brother Eamon’s wedding, now that they finally have marriage equality Irelans.
Those of you who keep your ears to the ground will know that Eamon is already married to his partner Steve Mannion, as they married back in Vancouver in 2009, but the couple have expressed their wish to have an Irish wedding ceremony since the legislation is poised to change.
Colin himself spoke in favour of the bill before it passed, saying: “The fact that my brother had to leave Ireland to have his dream of being married become real is insane. INSANE!”
But, the couple may have to wait a while to have their wedding, as although same-sex marriage is technically legal in the country, the changes to the law that allow ceremonies to take place have yet to be completed.
There is a mandatory three month notice period for weddings, so ceremonies would be possible in the new year if the law changes by the end of the summer. Frances Fitzgerald, who is Justice minister recognised people’s frustration when he said: “I am very conscious that many couples will want to get married as soon as possible. I am working to make that happen.”
But, a government source has pretty much supported the long process, saying: “Our hands are tied. We are at the mercy of the courts.”
