CoverGirl has a new male spokesperson—a first for the cosmetics brand. However, James Charles, is making news not for his beautiful face and makeup, but for his offensive tweets.
Charles made a joke on Twitter about Africa and how it is a disease-infested, unsafe country. People got upset.
In his tweet, it said: “I can’t believe we’re going to Africa today omg what if we get Ebola?” “James we’re fine we could have gotten in at chipotle last year”
Many folks became up in arms, saying that his statement was completely inaccurate and only highlighted Charles’ ignorance. In fact, the World Health Organization says that Africa is now free of Ebola.
Noticing the backlash, the social media star came out with a few tweets of apology, stating: “I am extremely sorry. Regardless of my intentions, words have consequences. I take full responsibility and will learn and do better.”
He followed that up with another message stating: “I was told what to say and that’s not how an apology should work. I am extremely sorry for my tweet and I feel like sh*t for saying it. I am travelling to Africa today with a few friends for a school trip, ironically enough, it’s an educational trip because we all know very little about the country but are eager to learn…It was never my intent to offend anyone and I am sorry.”
He then tweeted another apology for calling Africa a country, stating that he was specifically referring to South Africa, where he will be traveling.
