Last we heard from Daniel Craig, he seemed very certain that he would never be returning as James Bond after the latest outing, Spectre.
He has previously said that he would rather “slash his wrists” than star as Bond again, and said it was “just wasn’t what he wanted” despite people throwing “huge amounts of money at him”.
Now, do keep in mind this hasn’t been officially confirmed by Daniel, his reps, or anyone over at MGM, so treat this as a rumour for now.
However, the source said: “Daniel is done – pure and simple – he told top brass at MGM after Spectre. They threw huge amounts of money at him, but it just wasn’t what he wanted. He had told people after shooting that this would be his final outing, but the film company still felt he could come around after Spectre if he was offered a money deal.”
Despite his “slash his wrists” comment, Daniel had also said that he would consider coming back as Bond “for the money”. What seemed to tip the scales for him, though, was a knee injury he suffered while filming Spectre, which helped him decide not to take on another Bond film. The deal they offered Daniel was reportedly worth £68 million.
The source continued: “With knee problems and general exhaustion, he felt it was a journey with an ending.”
As I mentioned previously, we should take this with a pinch of salt until we get official confirmation or denial. However, the question now is – who will take over from Daniel Craig?
The favourite for the moment seems to be Tom Hiddleston, who was recently seen meeting with Bond director Sam Mendes. Also in the running are Idris Elba, Damian Lewis, and Tom Hardy.
Coral had started bets on who will play the next Bond, with Hiddleston leading with 2-1 odds, but has suspended all betting after a pretty big gamble.
A Coral rep said: “There is no smoke without fire, and following the big gamble on Tom Hiddleston in the last 24 hours, we’ve had no choice but to pull the plug on the market. Earlier in the year there was a gamble on Idris Elba and Damian Lewis, but nothing has come close to the recent gamble on Hiddleston.”
Personally, I think Hiddleston would make a fantastic Bond, but we shall have to wait and see.
