Democratic Nominee Makes History in Texas

Dallas County Sheriff and Democratic nominee for Texas Governor, Lupe Valdez.

Former Dallas County Sheriff Lupe Valdez makes history in Texas as the first openly lesbian and Latina nominee for the Democratic party in the Governors election. She won 53.1 % of the vote against her competitor, Andrew White. Valdez will be on the Texas ballot this coming November with incumbent Republican Governor Greg Abbott. In a statement following her win, Valdez said the victory “proved that no matter who you are, where you are from, or who you love — in this state, you’ve got a fighting chance.”
