Denver Proposed Ban on Conversion Therapy for Minors

The City of Denver is proposing to ban conversion therapy for minors. On Monday, Mayor Michael Hancock announced “These terrible practices that target our youth, simply for being who they are, are dangerous and immoral. We’re going to make sure that they never happen within our city.” Conversion therapy on minors is practiced by licensed therapists, given by the approval of the minors guardians, that believe being LGBTQ is a mental illness and attempt to change their sexual orientation or gender identity. Mayor Hancock is pushing forward with the proposal by the recommendation of the LGBT Commission, and with the support of City Council members Robin Kniech and Jolon Clark. Denver’s City Council will began the debate at their Safety, Housing, Education and Homelessness Committee on Wednesday, December 19th.
