Netflix has landed another star comedian for an upcoming standup special. As you may be aware, Netflix has previously had Seinfeld, Chappelle, and Louis C.K. headline comedy specials, and now it appears the streaming service will host Ellen DeGeneres.
There were hints and cryptic tweets earlier this week, and then Ellen confirmed it in an official statement. She said:
“It has been 15 years since I did a stand up special. 15 years. And I’m writing it now, I can’t wait. I’ll keep you posted when and where I’m gonna shoot my Netflix special. I’m excited to do it; I’m excited for you to see it.”
While you may be familiar with Ellen’s daytime talk show or her voice as Dory in the Finding Nemos films, she actually had a successful standup special in the early 2000’s on HBO, which was nominated for Emmys.
There are rumors that Ellen will be paid nearly $40 million for the special. But regardless, it is clear that Netflix is willing to invest in comedic talent, and Ellen is a smart choice for such an investment. We can’t wait!
