Ellen Page & Evan Rachel Wood on Into the Forest’s Female Empowerment

The upcoming releas Into the Forest is about two sisters (Ellen Page and Evan Rachel Wood) who must work together to survive a massive, continent wide power outage.

And apparently, it’s that focus on women navigating the challenges of a post-apocalyptic environment that is most important to those in front of and behind the camera.

Writer and director Patricia Rozema said: “I was very drawn to doing a story with two women as leads. I mean, much of what happens could have happened to two brothers, for instance, rather than  two sisters, but it’s just so rare that I felt like it should be done.”

For co-star Evan Rachel Wood, the tale of two women navigating this dangerous environment with only each other to rely on is “empowering”.

She said: “Everything that they’ve ever taken for granted is suddenly taken away. These two sisters come together and survive in the most drastic conditions. It’s a very empowering story for women as well.”

As for Ellen herself, she had this to say: “There’s something so beautiful about this movie because they have to unite in a way that’s very, very powerful and necessary in order to figure out what to do and how to survive.”

It will certainly be interesting to see how this is handled in the film, and it will also be refreshing to see what would happen from a female perspective. A lot of what we will undoubtedly see in Into the Forest would in theory happen to women all over the world in the case of such a far reaching disaster. This is something we have seen a little of, of course, but I can’t wait to see what two acting powerhouses do with this.

Into the Forest is out July 29.
