The very first episode of GAYCATION, starring Ellen Page and one of VICE’s new shows, came out yesterday.
If you somehow haven’t heard about the show, it’s essentially Ellen Page’s big queer trip around the world. The show follows her and best friend Ian Daniel as they travel around the world. The official release date for this show is March 2, so think of this as a bit of teaser episode.
Ellen and Ian’s big gay trip will include locations such as Japan, Brazil, Jamaica, and the US, where they will learn more about LGBT life and culture around the world.
The very first episode, which you can watch below, starts us off in Japan. This first outing of GAYCATION focuses on gay culture in Japan, given that same-sex marriage is still illegal and being homosexual still carries a hefty social stigma.
An official press statement on the show reads: “However, certain cities have begun to recognize same-sex partnerships and the LGBTQ community continues to thrive in the country’s vibrant culture and nightlife. Ellen and Ian find out what it’s really like to identify as LGBTQ in Japan and meet some of the people struggling to find their voice in a country that refuses to give them equal rights under the law.”
