On Tuesday, reports of an alleged racially and homophobically-charged attack on actor, Jussie Smollett filled news outlets. Jussie is one of the few openly gay black actors on primetime television, who actively shows support for the LGBT community and other human rights advocacy movements. While in Chicago to film for the show that skyrocketed his acting career, Empire, Smollet told police he was attacked by two men who poured a chemical on him and put a noose around his neck. The actor also stated that his attackers yelled “This is MAGA country,” referring to Trump’s well-known campaign slogan, “Make America Great Again.” Chicago police have since released a photo of surveillance footage of two people walking near the incident, asking for information on these possible witnesses or involved persons. Celebrities such as Ellen DeGeneres, Jada Pinkett Smith, Lee Daniels, and many more have sent their thoughts and support to Smollett. At this time, it is reported that Smollett is at home and recovering well.
