England fan told to take down rainbow flag during World Cup in Russia

An England fan was told to take down a rainbow flag in a Russian football stadium shortly before Sunday’s England vs Panama match.

A steward removed supporter Joe White’s rainbow flag which featured the Three Lions St George’s Cross, saying that “those colours are not allowed”.

However, when Fifa and the Football Supporters’ Association were contacted he was handed back the flag.

The 25-year-old from Tooting in south London said that it was a “touch and go Situation” for a while and that it was “frustrating”.

“We’ve come over not just to support England, which is obviously a huge part of why we’re here, we’re here because we are England fans but also to show solidarity with LGBT Russians.

“To have that visibility and start that conversation that might not otherwise be had and so to be defined when there wasn’t that issue.”

Mr White was allowed to fly his rainbow flag and England won 6-1 against Panama.
