Evan Rachel Wood, the 28-year-old actress, recently posted a frank and sincere YouTube video discussing bisexuality and her difficult journey of coming out.
You may remember Wood from such notable films as Thirteen (she was nominated for a Golden Globe), Across the Universe, and The Wrestler, among so many others, as well as various television series, including True Blood and Mildred Pierce (again, for which she was nominated for a Golden Globe and an Emmy). She was also in the spotlight a while back for her personal life. She was engaged to Marilyn Manson, and then after that relationship ended, she wed Jamie Bell in 2012. Wood and Bell, however, split up in 2014.
In her video, Wood tells viewers what it was like having, and hiding, a girlfriend when she was a young teenager: “I was terrified, and I ended it…. I was too scared of somebody finding out… I had no way to express myself. I was also very confused, and I didn’t know that bisexuality was a thing…. I just assumed that I was gay. Even though that I was still attracted to boys… I guess I thought that the gayness trumped that…”
Eventually Wood came to terms with her bisexuality; however, she still felt alone when she came out to people and got strange looks. That is when she realized that people supported her when she said she was gay but dismissed her when she explained that she was actually bisexual. She said: “I felt like I had found a place, it was a community, there were people, there was an outpouring of support when I came out as gay… Instead of eye rolls and quickly changing the conversation when I bring up bisexuality. There’s not even a fight about it. It just doesn’t exist…. “(People who are bisexual are) not confused about who we are, but we’re confused about where we fit in the world.”
Woods continued: “Maybe people will start to take us a bit more seriously… I hope this gets people talking, and debating. Because even if you don’t agree with what I’m saying, at least you’re talking about it, like it’s a real thing.”
