Fantastic Beasts 2—Will We See Gay Dumbledore?

Are you ready for the Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them sequel?  Warner Bros. Studios released a plot synopsis:

“As he promised he would, Grindelwald has made a dramatic escape and has been gathering more followers to his cause — elevating wizards above all non-magical beings. The only one who might be able to stop him is the wizard he once called his dearest friend, Albus Dumbledore.

But Dumbledore will need help from the wizard who had thwarted Grindelwald once before, his former student Newt Scamander. The adventure reunites Newt with Tina (Katherine Waterston), Queenie (Alison Sudol) and Jacob (Dan Fogler), but his mission will also test their loyalties as they face new perils in an increasingly dangerous and divided wizarding world.”

And how exciting to see a young(er) Dumbledore in action!  As you may recall, author J.K. Rowling previously said that Dumbledore is gay. Rowling explained at a press conference:

“You will see Dumbledore as a younger man and quite a troubled man — he wasn’t always the sage… We’ll see him at that formative period of his life…As far as his sexuality is concerned, watch this space.”

But the question remains: will we actually see Dumbledore (Jude Law) be openly gay on the big screen?  There was some criticism before when Rowling announced Dumbledore was gay without ever showing it, or even alluding to it, in any of the Harry Potter books or films.  For example, LGBT advocate Peter Tatchell complained:

“It’s good that children’s literature includes the reality of gay people, since we exist in every society, but I am disappointed that (Rowling) did not make Dumbledore’s sexuality explicit in the Harry Potter book. Making it obvious would have sent a much more powerful message of understanding and acceptance.”

Of course, this will not be Rowling’s only shot at letting the audience finally see Dumbledore’s sexual preference.  This new Fantastic Beasts film, which just began filming and is scheduled for release in 2018, is the second one in a five-part series.  So don’t worry – there will be plenty of opportunities for Dumbledore to ask Grindelwald for a romantic walk on the beach.
