Do you remember the Frog and Toad stories from the 1970’s? Who can forget those two best friends and their tales of journey, trials and tribulations, and lessons-learned. Well, now it turns out that perhaps Frog and Toad were more than just friends.
The author’s daughter, Adrianne Lobel, recently explained: “[They are] of the same sex, and they love each other… It was quite ahead of its time in that respect.”
Frog and Toad author, Arnold Lobel, passed away in 1987 and never commented on if Frog and Toad were just friends or something more. So we will never know for sure; however, Arnold was gay and Adrianne claims that her father’s stories included aspects of his personal life within them.
In a 1977 interview, Arnold stated: “You know, if an adult has an unhappy love affair, he writes about it… Well, if I have an unhappy love affair, I have to somehow use all that pain and suffering but turn it into a work for children.”
Adrianne elaborates on this sentiment: “I think ‘Frog and Toad’ really was the beginning of him coming out…”
So what do you think, were Frog and Toad just friends or perhaps was Frog planning to put a ring on it the whole time?
