Games of Thrones creator on gay sex scenes

Hit TV series Game of Thrones is known for its graphic violence and steamy sex scenes — including explicit gay sex scenes.

However gay or bisexual sexual sex scenes are missing almost completely from the A Song of Ice and Fire books by George R. R. Martin, on which the series is based.

Speaking at the Edinburgh International Book Festival, the best-selling author said that he hadn't included any gay sex scenes in his books because he writes each book from the viewpoint of a particular character, none of whom has so far been gay.

"Frankly, it is the way I prefer to write fiction because that is the way all of us experience life. You're seeing me from your viewpoint, you're not seeing what someone over here is seeing," he said.

He also revealed that he had many requests from fans to include some explicit gay sex scenes in his books and that most of those requests had come from women.

He went on to hint that he might consider including some gay sex in any future books but only if it served the purpose of the plot.

"I'm not going to do it just for the sake of doing it," he said. "If one of my viewpoint characters is in a situation then I'm not going to shy away from it, but you just can't insert things because everyone wants to see them.

"It is not democracy. If it was a democracy then Joffrey would have died much earlier than he did."
