Gay icon, actor Tab Hunter, has died three days before his 87th birthday.
With his boy-next-door good looks he became a teenage heartthrob, and starred in 50s films such as the World War II drama Battle Cry and Western The Burning Hills where he played alongside Natalie Wood.
He also appeared in the weekly sit com The Tab Hunter Show.
His career enjoyed a resurgence in the 80s when he starred opposite Divine in John Waters’ Pink Flamingoes. He also starred in Grease 2.
Hunter was gay but “dated” co-stars such as Natalie Wood when to be openly homosexual in Hollywood would have destroyed his career.
He also enjoyed a long-term affair with Anthony Perkins, the star of Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho.
Tab Hunter Confidential, a documentary about his life, was released in 2015, and a movie documenting his relationship with Perkins is currently being developed by J. J. Abrams and Zachary Quinto.
