John Cho, the actor who plays Sulu in the most recent Star Trek films, announced yesterday that in the upcoming film, Star Trek Beyond, we will learn that his character is gay. In fact, the film reveals that Sulu is in a same-sex relationship and even has a daughter!
Cho explained that this decision to make Sulu gay was meant to honor George Takei, the actor who originally played Sulu in the original television series, and who is, in real life, gay.
However, Takei was less than thrilled with the decision to make Sulu gay. He explained: “I’m delighted that there’s a gay character. Unfortunately, it’s a twisting of Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry’s creation, into which he put so much thought. I think it’s really unfortunate.”
Takei had previously expressed his concerns directly to both writer Simon Pegg and director Justin Lin. Takei explained to the filmmakers that they should be “imaginative and create a character who has a history of being gay, rather than Sulu, who had been straight all this time, suddenly being revealed as being closeted.”
So what do you think – is this an exciting development or does making the Sulu character gay simply run too contrary to the creator’s original vision for Star Trek?
