Girl Kicked Out of Prom For Wearing a Tux

Apparently, we all travelled back to 1950 without realising, as a female student was thrown out of her prom for wearing a tux instead of a dress.

Aniya Wolf from Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, was barred from attending her prom at Bishop McDevitt High School because she was not following the dress code. Aniya is a lesbian who says she has always preferred to dress in a more masculine fashion.

She spoke about what happened to ABC27 News, saying: “I’ve just always been like this, ever since I was little. I was always more masculine. You wouldn’t catch me playing with any Barbie dolls, I’ll tell you that right now. ‘You know, a lot of girls’ dresses, I mean I’m not saying that all of them are this way, but they do show a lot of skin. I think I’m dressed pretty modestly.”

Aniya did stress that her classmates and peers do treat her with respect and acceptance, but sadly it is school officials who make her feel like a “mistake”.

Aniya’s mother, Carolyn, also spoke to ABC27 News: “‘I told them that I had read the dress code that was given to the students and I didn’t think that it precluded her from wearing a suit. I said that this was very unfair, particularly at the last minute.  We had gone out and bought a new suit. I think my daughter is beautiful in a suit.”

However, the school seems convinced it didn’t do anything wrong, and wrote a statement on their Facebook page: “Without question, we love, respect and cherish all of our students. The dress code for the prom specified girls must wear formal dresses. It also stated that students who failed to follow the dress code would not be admitted… Bishop McDevitt will continue to practice acceptance and love for all of our students. They are tremendous young men and women. We simply ask that they follow the rules that we have put into place.”

However, many are not happy with the school, had some have even pointed out that the dress code does not seem to bar female students from wearing suits. Instead the code says that “dresses must be formal”, which is simply a rule stating that no casual dresses, mini skirts, or anything of that nature can be worn.

Happily, Aniya has been invited to attend prom by William Penn High School Principal Brandon T. Carter.
