GLAAD Report of LGBT Characters on TV Shows Numbers are Up!

A 2019 GLAAD report called Where We Are on TV was released which measured the amount of LGBT characters on Primetime television today. People are happy to see that the numbers have risen and that the report shows a 10.2 percent (90 regular plus 30 recurring) out of 879 characters on TV identify as LGBT. Compared to 15 years ago, this is a big increase from a mere 12 characters on TV, a number so low that it had prompted GLAAD to call television networks to encourage more of an LGBTQ presence. The report counted all lesbian, gay, bisexual+, transgender and queer characters during the 2019-2020 television season from “prime time TV, cable programs, and streaming shows on platforms such as Netflix and Amazon.” With such success in the wind, GLAAD continues their quest for LGBT recognition and challenged the entertainment industry to represent the LGBT community on primetime television at 20% by 2025.
