She doesn’t just play a bisexual woman on tv; she is one! Sara Ramirez, known for playing Callie Torres on Grey’s Anatomy, came out publicly over the weekend, identifying herself as “queer” and “bisexual.”
Ramirez was selected as one of the speakers at the 40 to None Summit, an event organized by True Colors, Cyndi Lauper’s advocacy group committed to ending LGBT youth homelessness.
During Sara’s speech, she said: “So many of our youth experiencing homelessness are youth whose lives touch on many intersections, whether they be gender identity, gender expression, race, class, sexual orientation, religion, citizenship status.”
“Because of the intersections that exist in my own life: Woman, multi-racial woman, woman of color, queer, bisexual, Mexican-Irish American, immigrant, and raised by families heavily rooted in Catholicism on both my Mexican & Irish sides,” she continued, “I am deeply invested in projects that allow our youth’s voices to be heard, and that support our youth in owning their own complex narratives so that we can show up for them in the ways they need us to.”
Ramirez took it a step further and went to Twitter to come out on a more public stage.
#40ToNoneSummit #SpeakingMyTruth!” she captioned the above picture. “Will post full video of speech soon! #ThankYou @TrueColorsFund #WomanOfColor #Bisexual #Queer #Immigrant.”
Ramirez is a member of the True Colors board of directors, and has been an LGBT advocate for many years now. She married her husband, Ryan DeBolt, in 2011.
