Gwendoline Christie Confirms Return of Captain Phasma In Star Wars Episode 8

Given how much the character of Captain Phasma, played by Gwendoline Christie, was hyped up her rather small role in Star Wars Episode 7 was surprising.

That, plus the events that transpire in The Force Awakens (no spoilers, don’t worry), have led fans to question whether or not Phasma will be making a return for Episode 8.

She confirmed this when speaking to People Magazine at the SAG Awards on Saturday, saying: “I will be in the next Star Wars movie. I think that’s an exclusive, actually. I was very overexcited. I made no secret of the fact that I really campaigned for the part for a long time. And then I was delighted when JJ Abrams wanted to have me in the film and then wanted to cast me in this role that had originally been designed for a man.”

“I thought the costume was incredibly striking. I also just liked this notion of a female stormtrooper. I felt it encouraged diversity and it was doing something new and it was an interesting bit of casting for women, and I hope that in something that was such a mainstream success it would breed more of those kind of opportunities for other women.”

Naturally, the actress (best known for her role as Brienne of Tarth in Game of Thrones) had previously said that she was pleased when they did not change Phasma’s costume from it’s original design.

“I was struck by how incredible it looked, but also I liked that it was stormtrooper armour. It hadn’t been sexualised or feminised in any way. I thought, ‘That is interesting. That’s very modern.’”
